Collage on the Continent

Berlin Germany
One way of really getting to know a city is checking out the posters, flotsam and jetsam and stickers showing  creative events and happenings. It is also perfect inspiration for the collage artist. On my travels I am continually collecting small pieces of paper treasure  with eyes peeled from the ground up. I even commandeer my friends (thanks Shas) to help me in this task. I did these collages when travelling a few years ago on the continent.

TO MARKET TO MARKET

There's a great market in Hobart at Salamanca which has an amazing array of local produce. The Hmong refugees from Laos have vegetable stalls there and they are true works of art. All the produce is super fresh, superbly displayed and vibrant in colour. A friend brought me these red onions and purple carrots ( bottom right) !!!

Embroidery buddies

I had my best bud down to stay last week and she was inspired to embroider one of my screen-printed flowers on linen. The results...one happy camper and stunning work.

Dragonfly Dreaming

Dragonfly dreaming
My mum is incredibly talented in a wide variety of creative pursuits. Painting is her favourite. It's wonderful to go to her house and smell the turpentine mingled with the oils. I especially love the layering of colours and texture that the brush and palette knife gives.

Too Pretty To Eat

We had an old friend to dinner last night Annamaria Talas. She is a renowned documentary producer specialising in cutting edge scientific subjects, her latest being "The Hobbit Enigma". She is also incredibly creative and for special occasions will make traditional hungarian honey cakes. The decoration is the most important part of the process...must be red...from the heart.....then add some special treasures (her mothers pearls, buttons, beads and vintage images)

The urge to spray on walls

 The Berlin wall
One of my favourite types of street art is stencilling. So I am often in the back alleys marvelling at the simple, whimsical and sometimes powerful impact that the medium produces. I love the blurred edges. Often you will see a stencil repeated all over a city.

Florence
I too have this urge to join the action with spraycan and stencil. In the meantime there's always some new laneway to discover.

Paradise at Peppergreen

Recently I did a road trip down the Hume Hwy from Sydney to Melbourne. About 1.5 hrs out south of Sydney I decided to drop into the small historic town of Berrima. There perched up on a hill was Peppergreen Collectables and Antiques.

Soon as I walked in the door I knew I was in vintage textile heaven. We are talking a veritable wonderland of a huge eclectic mix of all things textile (purely vintage) from threads, fabrics, quilts, haberdashery, table wear, linen, buttons ( mmm... to die for!) and more.......and then there's all the other stuff...collectables  on mass....... crockery, bottles, books, old toys........and more. It is a huge collection in a number of rooms. I never saw it all and I was there for and 1.5hrs!!!! I had to drag myself away and hit the road or I was never going to get to my destination.

I used some of that stick on fusible webbing....ironed it onto the back of the fabric.......cut out desirable shapes.....frayed......Peeled off fusible webbing.......ironed onto card......zig zagged with black thread......send to friends and sell.

Art from the Heart

Last year I travelled to Alice Springs which is in the heart of Australia. It is renowned for its hot sunny weather and stunning red earth but on this particular occasion it rained for 8 out of the 10 days. What to do???? art of course. For inspiration I went to the local art shop where I purchased some gorgeous chalky Derwent Pencils ( new in their line) and some natural coloured board.....here's a few drawings

Ahhhhh gates!!!!!!

CAROLYN'S GATE

My sister-in-law shares my passion for iron work....especially gates.... She lives on the south coast of NSW on a beautiful property. There's just something about the design and quality of wrought iron work that tickles my fancy and I can't help myself when a camera is at hand.....consequently I have taken shots from all over the world of their gorgeous curves, rusted and distressed states, the grand, the dilapidated and the views through them....

SHE ALSO GROWS A MEAN ROSE!
